CTPL insurance in the Philippines: what it covers, why you need it and how to get it online

CTPL stands for Compulsory Third Party Liability. You need it to register or renew a car or motorcycle with the LTO, and it is the first insurance every vehicle owner buys.

This page explains what CTPL covers, what it does not, and how to get your certificate without a trip to the office.

What CTPL covers

CTPL covers injury or death to other people caused by your vehicle. It is the legal minimum, and it protects third parties, not you.

What CTPL does not cover

  • Damage to your own vehicle.
  • Theft of your vehicle.
  • Your own injuries as the driver or rider.
  • Damage to property that belongs to other people.

How to get your CTPL online

Most of the process can be done from your phone.

  • Have your OR/CR, plate number, vehicle details and a valid ID ready.
  • Get a quote and choose your CTPL through an advisor or an online form.
  • Pay online, by card, e-wallet or bank transfer, where offered.
  • Receive the certificate by email, and use it for your LTO registration or renewal.

The LTO validation step

The LTO has been introducing a Certificate of Validation for CTPL, region by region. Whether your region requires it depends on the current LTO rules, which change. Ask before you buy, so your certificate is accepted when you register or renew.

When CTPL is not enough

If you want your own vehicle protected against damage and theft, you need comprehensive cover on top of CTPL. We explain the difference in our guides for cars and for motorcycles.
